Apple lays important groundwork for stronger iPhone security

Apple ran the first test of its new Background Security Improvements feature on Tuesday. Registered developers can access the initial security patch, though it does nothing aside from test the new system.

The eventual goal is enable Apple to distribute security patches separated from software updates.

Apple begins testing iPhone Background Security Improvements

Apple works hard to keep hackers from stealing financial data and other important information from iPhone, Mac and iPad users. It frequently updates its operating systems to close security holes. Previously, this required users to install software updates, which some users are reluctant to do because they mistakenly believe ridiculous conspiracy theories.

So Apple implemented Background Security Improvements in last fall’s iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1 and macOS 26.1 upgrades. These deliver “additional security protections between software updates,” according to Apple.

Although the new security system is in place, it has yet to be used. It’s drawing closer, though, as the first test took place Tuesday. iOS 26.3 Beta (a) comes with the note, “The latest available Background Security Improvement will also be installed.”

This test follows the first round of betas of iOS 26.3, iPadOS 26.3 and macOS 26.3 from December. Additional betas are expected as Apple moves toward a full release of these operating system upgrades to the public in the coming weeks.

Keeping your Apple gear safe

Once Background Security Improvements move beyond the testing phase, they will be installed automatically in the background … hence the name. And by default, recent iOS, iPadOS and macOS versions are set to automatically install them.

That said, users have the option to deactivate them. Just understand that by doing so, you make your computer more open to hackers.

To disable the security feature on iPhone and iPad, go to Settings > Privacy & Security and look for Background Security Improvements. Tap on it, then toggle off Automatically Install.

On Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Privacy & Security.
