iPhone users are more loyal to Apple than ever

Phone users are sticking with Apple at unprecedented levels, according to a new nationwide survey, underscoring the growing strength of the company’s ecosystem and the challenges facing rivals trying to win them over.

And while Android users’ loyalty to their smartphone maker is noticeably weaker, that doesn’t mean huge numbers are switching to Apple.

iPhone loyalty hits a new high

For iPhone users, the biggest advantage of the Apple ecosystem is how effortlessly everything works together. An iPhone connects seamlessly with a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods, letting you start a task on one device and pick it up instantly on another through features like Handoff, AirDrop and Universal Clipboard. Messages, photos and files stay in sync automatically with iCloud, while services like FaceTime and iMessage keep communication tightly integrated.

This level of cohesion reduces friction in everyday use, making the technology feel less like a collection of separate gadgets and more like a single, unified system designed to save time and simplify life.

And it makes users very loyal. A study done by SellCell, based on responses from more than 5,000 U.S. consumers, found that 96.4% of iPhone owners plan to stay with Apple when they upgrade their next device. That figure marks a significant increase from 91.9% in a study done by the same company in 2021 and 90.5% in its 2019 study, continuing a steady upward trend in customer retention.

Android user loyalty is not as strong

By comparison, Android users show lower levels of brand loyalty, with 86.4% saying they intend to stick with their current device maker. That doesn’t mean they’ll all make an iPhone their next device, though. The study found that 26.8% of Android users would consider going to Apple if they gave up their current brand.    

Samsung and Google both recorded gains compared with previous surveys, indicating a broader trend toward stronger brand attachment across the smartphone industry.

Apple’s strengths and weaknesses

Long-term loyalty appears to be a key factor. The survey found that 83.8% of iPhone users have stayed with Apple for more than five years.

When asked why they remain loyal, most iPhone users pointed to their preference for iOS, while others cited the broader Apple ecosystem, including services and connected devices. Reliability, ease of use and privacy protections also ranked among the reasons users continue to choose iPhone.

For the relatively small group considering a switch, cost remains the biggest factor. The survey found that price and perceived value are the leading reasons users look outside their current platform, followed by interest in new technology.

Overall, the report paints a picture of a maturing market in which users are becoming increasingly “locked in” to their chosen platforms. For iPhone users in particular, the data suggests that once they enter Apple’s ecosystem, they are more likely than ever to stay there.
